first nations youth dig time
This week, we were once again joined by Coach Sandy and riders from the Líl’wat Ka-xléq-a Youth Mountain Bike Program. This summer’s project was to put the finishing touches on the Cut Yer Roots connector in the Nester’s hill zone. After my struggle to find an appropriate source of mineral soil, due to the prevalence of bedrock in the area, we managed to cap the last 25 metres of trail. The riders then shaped the tread and tamped it down for a fast rolling, smooth trail. After re-naturalizing the dirt mines, we put up the trail sign just in time to welcome the first “customers”... some tourists from Australia who were both lost and stoked. Thanks for your help Líl’wat Ka-xléq-a riders!
lots more work on upper lots
Given the slow melt of winter’s white stuff over the top of Mount Sproatt, we’re taking this opportunity to continue our renovations on Upper Lord of the Squirrels. The “opportunity” is to work on inaccessible (closed) sections of a trail. The snow up top is keeping traffic at bay for now so we can tackle larger projects. “Re-organizing” rocks through chunky sections typically involves making holes and then re-filling them. Some chunks turn out to be “icebergs” in which case the repair can take a while and a rather large hole is involved. One of my favorite repairs involves pulling an iceberg, then simply replacing it in its original hole in a more appropriate position (to make the trail smoother). Not every project can get completed (and safe to ride through) by the end of a work day so please respect the trail closures. We’ll keep working on LOTS until it opens… given the weather forecast, likely next weekend!
See you on the Trails!
