Inspections
As the bears and trails emerge from hibernation, our focus is on checking conditions, making work plans and dealing with “emergencies”. This week, Michal and I laid out a re-design for the south end of Delineator that will be tackled by the Whistler Secondary Outdoor Leadership Program students at the end of April. The Baxter Creek “Delineator” trail was built by Boyd McTavish (funded by the Baxter Creek developers - thanks John!) to replace parts of “Shit Happens” that got severed by the development of the Rainbow neighbourhood. At the Alpine Meadows end, a stunt filled freeride line already existed and it was simply “connected” to Delineator. The wooden stunts were removed in 2016, leaving a rather straight steep line that exceeds the grade guidelines for the trail’s blue rating (in both directions). Michal and I investigated every option to mellow the grades while considering that Delineator is a 2-way trail and the limited real estate available on this rocky ridge. It won’t be an easy build but that’s never stopped us… or Mr. Kung’s students!
In the “emergencies” department, deadfall was cut out on Kill Me, Thrill Me, Danimal North, Butterflies and Rainbows and all over Cheakamus. We’ll deal with the huge logs on the Far Out Traverse when we can drive to the site with all the necessary equipment (probably right after Easter).
Reilly joined the fun to help with the Flashback root-ball and we also dealt with the mysterious boulder that was blocking lower Tunnel Vision. Despite a thorough 2 minute investigation, we could not figure out where the boulder originated…
Please keep those Trailforks updates coming! Here’s a good example.
See you on the trails!
