Trails Update: June 12, 2025

hot and sad

That escalated quickly… Normally, around this time of year, I’m ranting about mosquitoes and cold rain… but alas, this year, I’m sunburned and covered in Spruce Budworms. At least, the birding around Cheakamus has been colorful! The wildfire risk rating reached Extreme on Monday. Subsequently, we rescheduled this week’s Tuesday Dig Night to Sunday MORNING, June 21. Check the WORCA events page for updates about Tuesday June 17 trail night.

Even MORE sad and concerning was the development of a wildfire in the Alice Lake area near Squamish. Later in the week we could see and smell the smoke from that fire driven by Howe Sound’s world renowned wind. Let’s hope BC Wildfire crews can wrangle the flames and the weather cooperates to help put that fire out.

beat the heat

When the thermometer moves up, so does the trail crew. We worked near the snowline on Sproatt Mountain. For those also looking to get riding up high - there’s still too much snow on LESS to enjoy the ride. Mystic is covered in winter tree debris and large patches of snow still cover LESS through the first half of the trail. The second half is saturated and covered in spongy debris. We’re moving the tools up LOTS fixing braking ruts and improving drainage features. The crew’s rockwork has been stellar so far. We should get into LESS next week. I’m optimistic for a June 20 “opening” (of LESS). If you’re trying to beat the heat, remember that every trail in Whistler ends at some sort of swimming hole!

See you on the Trails!
